Mitchell Katine represents clients in matters dealing with
employment, real estate, insurance, and disability law issues. Mitchell is a
former adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center and South
Texas College of Law where he taught "HIV & The Law" for over 10 years.
Mitchell served as local counsel for John Lawrence and Tyron Garner in
Lawrence v. Texas, wherein the United States Supreme Court on June 26, 2003
overruled Bowers v. Hardwick and removed sodomy laws throughout America.
Mitchell helped create a gay and lesbian legal organization for Houston
attorneys, the Texas Association of Lesbian and Gay Elected and Appointed
Officials, and the State Bar of Texas section on Sexual Orientation and
Gender Identification issues. In August 2003 he received the Uncommon Man
Award from the Houston Chapter of the Uncommon Legacy Foundation, in October
2003 he received the Achievement Award from the Gay and Lesbian Medical
Association, and in March 2004 Mitchell received the Political Equity Award
from the Human Rights Campaign ("HRC") at its Black Tie Gala. Mitchell and
his partner, Walter, have fulfilled a lifelong dream of having a family by
adopting two babies, Sebrina and Sebastian, who are both 20 months old.
Mitchell regularly appears on local and national television and radio
programs where the issue of same-sex marriage, gay and lesbian adoption, and
civil rights are discussed and debated.
